Del Mar, California based Infinit Lash Products recently issued a public advisory on how to minimize irritation or allergic reactions when using eyelash extension products.

“Having an allergic reaction to eyelash extensions is rare, but it does happen. If you are a professional in the lash industry, you have probably heard about or personally experienced a client having an allergic reaction. Many times, what a client perceives to be an allergy could really just be an irritation. Knowing the difference between the two, and recognizing the signs of each, will help you better educate your clients and ensure their safety and peace of mind,” says Tasha Land, owner of Infinit Lash Products.

According to Wikipedia, an allergy is a condition caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system to typically harmless substances in the environment. Tasha explains that the most common symptoms of an allergic reaction associated with eyelash extensions are swollen eyelids, redness along the lash line, eye discomfort, and itchiness around the eye area. She also points out that these symptoms usually appear within a day or two after the lashes have been applied, and they increasingly get worse the more the skin is exposed to the allergen.

“It is very important to educate your clients when it comes to the possible allergic reactions that come with using an eyelash extension glue. This matter should be discussed to end-users before the treatment, not to scare them, but to keep them well informed so they know what to do in the event they experience any allergic reaction. This is the key to help them understand the process so they can make well-informed decisions,” says Land. In the event the allergy is already present, taking antihistamines can help alleviate symptoms, and removing the extensions as soon as possible is also advised. Should clients wish to keep their lash extensions on, there are medications available that can help. However, such medications require a doctor’s prescription.

On the other hand, Land explains that an irritation is typically less severe than an allergic reaction. They typically do not last longer than a day and will swiftly get better by themselves. “Irritations can also cause redness, usually to the whites of the eye (sclera) as well as itching of the eye area. In fact, most symptoms are very much similar to having an allergic reaction, but an irritation is much milder and will subside on its own, whereas allergies will not,” she says. Tasha explains that many people ask her, “Does eyelash extension glue burn?” and the answer is a firm no. “The majority of irritations come from the fumes of the lash adhesive as it cures or sets. The individual gas molecules from its base ingredient, cyanoacrylate, leave the adhesive while you work and can cause irritation to the eyes, as well as to someone breathing it in,” she said.

Meanwhile, Infinit Lash recently published a useful article on their website discussing how irritation can be prevented when using a lash extension adhesive. The company advises users to work in a well-ventilated room, use a fan, and open a door or window to keep the air flowing. Secondly, shaking the bottle before use ensures that the adhesive is mixed well to prevent the first drops from being extremely concentrated. Infinit Lash also advises using the correct amount of adhesive as a thin and even amount tends to work well enough, while limiting the possibility of experiencing irritation. Furthermore, one of the most crucial pieces of advice they give lash extension users is to understand the importance of maintaining and keeping their lash extensions clean. They explain that glue buildup is a breeding ground for bacteria that may lead to serious health risks, especially to the eyes.

Those looking for a gently formulated lash extension glue may visit Infinit Lash Products’ web store on Amazon. Their products are safe, affordable, and highly recommended by many salon owners and personal users.

Cristyn Spivey, one satisfied customer, said, “I started using this glue about six months ago and when I did, my business blew up. I cannot say enough good things about this glue. The consistency of the glue is perfect, my clients come in for their two-week fill and all I have to do is fill the new natural lashes that have come in. I can't tell you how many glues I have tried and, honestly, Infinit Lash’s eyelash adhesive is miles ahead of its competitors. I highly recommend this product.”
