AbuseGuardian.com reports on sexual assault charges which have been brought against a former Michigan State basketball star on Tuesday, March 15th, 2016. The lawsuit claims that in September of 2015 the star sexually assaulted a 24-year-old Mount Morris woman after a charity golf outing.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy stated that arrangements have been made for the former basketball player to turn himself into the authorities on Thursday for processing and arraignment. She commented on the charges stating, “The evidence, in this case, will show that the alleged actions of this defendant were not only criminal but arose out of a sense of entitlement sometimes found in prominent people.” The 39-year-old is being charged with unlawful imprisonment, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual penetration, second-degree criminal sexual conduct, and two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. He is accused of taking the alleged victim to a motel after a charity golf outing against her will. There he allegedly sexually assaulted her. She claims to have escaped and received assistance from a female in another motel room nearby.
According to RAINN, 68% of sexual assaults are not reported to the police. Many victims experience feelings of guilt or shame which could contribute to this high percentage or simply delay a victim in reporting an incident. Additionally, four out of five sexual assault offenders are someone the victim knows, and 47% of rape victims state that their offender is someone they considered a friend or acquaintance. These statistics could hinder the reporting of a crime to the authorities for several reasons.
Attorney Brian Kent of Laffey Bucci & Kent understands the seriousness of sexual assault allegations. He comments on the charges by stating, “Every victim needs to know that they are not at fault. While every individual is innocent until proven guilty, it is important to advocate for the victims of such traumatic events. With such high numbers of unreported sexual assaults we have a responsibility to not only support the victims but to work to prevent these incidents from occurring in the first place.” Kent and his firm are devoted to treating each client with individual attention and compassion. They sponsor the online resource website AbuseGuardian.com and are currently representing several individuals in claims of sexual assault.
