AbuseGuardian.com reports on a charity founded by Dr. Tina Meisami called Project Restoring Smiles, which provides free dental work for survivors of domestic physical abuse. The Toronto-based dentist aims to ease the pain of abuse survivors through the charity she founded in 2011.
In many cases, when women escape situations of domestic violence they must forgo even basic dental care due to financial struggles. In some cases, women even suffer from damage to their teeth due to the violence they experienced. Embarrassment by the state of one’s teeth can impede an individual’s healing process which can already be incredibly difficult to manage. Project Restoring Smiles aims to aid in the healing process for these women and has grown into a network of 18 dentists who have completed over $200,000 of free dental work for 45 patients.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, in the United States, “between 21-60% of victims of intimate partner violence lose their jobs due to reasons stemming from the abuse,” and there is a total loss of about 8 million paid workdays per year due to domestic violence. These statistics help to show the financial struggle alone that many victims of domestic abuse face.
Brian Kent, Esq. of the firm Laffey Bucci & Kent understands how difficult recovering from domestic abuse can be. He comments on this charity stating, “Recovery for many victims can be a very long and difficult road. As a society, we need to support and advocate for survivors who struggle with many difficulties through no fault of their own. This is one example of a group of people really focused on the needs of the victims that may otherwise be overlooked. I applaud this fantastic group of dentists who set an amazing example as they use their talents to help lift up those in need.” Kent and his firm sponsor the online resource website AbuseGuardian.com and are currently representing several clients in claims of abuse.
