AbuseGuardian.com reports on the arrest of a music teacher who is being charged with one felony count of criminal sexual assault. The assault allegedly occurred between April 1998 and September 1999 at the teacher’s former apartment.
The 57-year-old music teacher allegedly had sexual contact with an 8 or 9-year-old boy while playing pornography. The man was allegedly friends with the boy’s family yet was never his teacher. There were, at least, two alleged incidents and, according to the victim, during the second incident he told the teacher that he was uncomfortable. The teacher then allegedly threatened the victim not to tell anyone in a stern voice because he would get in trouble and lose his job. The suspect had been a teacher at Lincoln Elementary school at that time and previously worked as a camp counselor.
The victim never spoke of the alleged assault until 2015, when he was 26-years-old. He told his sister about the alleged molestation incidents and has now begun therapy. He filed a police report in January of 2016. The suspect’s attorney, Ellen R. Domph, commented on her client stating, “He is not a danger to the community, and these allegations are 17 years old.” He was arrested on Thursday, March 3rd, 2016, and the judge has set bail at $50,000.
The effects of childhood sexual abuse can be wide-ranging and long-lasting. Victims may experience a variety of psychological symptoms which have both short-term and long-term effects. Some of the most common side effects include anxiety, alcoholism, insomnia, drug abuse, and difficulty in relationships. Many victims experience feelings of shame or guilt, which can often delay reporting of such incidents as it appears to have done in this case. Research has also shown that those who have been victims of sexual assault are much more likely to be re-victimized, making it vital for victims to seek help with managing their side effects.
