AbuseGuardian.com reports on the arrest of a Los Gatos, California couple who are accused of sexually abusing their adopted son. The son alleges that he was abused for ten years after being adopted from a Russian orphanage in 2000, and is now speaking out publicly for the first time.
The alleged victim is now 23 and has filed a civil lawsuit against his parents as they face pending criminal charges. The adoptive father faces 44 counts which include incest, continual sexual abuse, and unlawful sexual intercourse. 21 of the charges made against him are faced by his wife as well. The son alleges that shortly after being adopted at the age of 9, the abuse began when he entered the United States. He claims that the abuse took an emotional toll on him and he attempted suicide several times. In 2012, he reportedly confided to a psychologist about his childhood abuse, and the psychologist reported the abuse to the Sheriff’s Office. At the time, the alleged victim was not seeking prosecution, but after gaining some distance from his parents, he decided to confide in a friend and reach out to authorities in August of 2015.
The father is currently being held in jail on $2.5 million bail and his wife has left prison after posting her $525,000 bail. The son has stated to police that he does not hate his parents and is looking to start his life over. He hopes that by speaking out now, other victims will have a voice. He stated, “I had to re-learn what love really is. I’m still processing it. This is a lifelong journey.”
Attorney Brian Kent, of the firm Laffey Bucci & Kent, understands the long-lasting effects that sexual abuse can cause a victim. He comments on the lawsuit by stating, “Minors are some of our society’s most vulnerable members, and many abusers are attracted to the sense of power that this gives them. It is important for a victim to know that the abuse is not their fault. The individual in this case may have a long road to recovery, yet we hope he has many supporters to assist him during the adjustment.” Kent and his firm sponsor the online resource website AbuseGuardian.com and are currently representing several clients in claims of sexual assault.
