AbuseGuardian.com reports on the expulsion of Yale’s senior captain of the men’s basketball team after he was accused of sexual assault. The former captain’s attorney has announced that he will be filing a lawsuit against the university.
Max Stern, the former student’s attorney, stated that his client was expelled during his second semester of his senior year for allegedly having non-consensual sex with another Yale student in October 2014. According to Stern, the two students were in a relationship during the fall of 2014. During this time, they reportedly had intercourse four times and the complaint which has spurred the expulsion is regarding the fourth encounter.
The couple had allegedly decided to end the relationship after engaging in intercourse for the fourth time, but according to Stern, the woman later voluntarily came back to his dorm room to spend the night in his bed. Stern states, “We believe that it defies logic and common sense that a woman would seek to re-connect and get back into bed with a man who she says forced her to have unwanted sex just hours earlier.” He continued to comment regarding his belief that the decision to expel his client was wrong and excessive and that his client “intends to sue Yale University to vindicate his rights.” Yale has not commented on or confirmed the expulsion of the basketball player citing confidentiality.
This recent controversy has caused much outrage on the campus. Many of the former captain’s teammates on the Bulldogs have shown support for him spurring other students on campus to criticize their efforts. Many Yale students are calling for greater awareness and action against sexual assault on campus, which is currently a hot topic across the nation. Complicating matters, even more, is the fact that the Yale men’s basketball team is having a record year reaching the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1962. Their former captain contributed greatly to their success scoring an average of 9.7 points per game.
