AbuseGuardian.com reports on a civil suit which has been filed against a venture capitalist partner, formerly with Sequoia Capital, claiming that he sexually abused a victim of human trafficking for more than 13 years.

The suit was filed in California last week in the San Mateo County Superior Court and claims that the capitalist is responsible “...for years of physical abuse, emotional trauma, and damage to her health.” The suit describes how the two met in 2001, and the tech investor promised to help her gain her freedom from the human traffickers that she was indebted to in exchange for sex. At this time, however, he allegedly abused and raped her to the point where she needed emergency surgery for injuries sustained in 2012. The suit claims that the victim had a signed contract in which she was to receive $40 million so that she would drop a lawsuit against him but that he only paid $10 million. The investor denies these allegations and has stated that he will be filing a countersuit. He claims that the plaintiff, in this case, is filing the suit against him as extortion after they ended a relationship on poor terms.

Sequoia Capital stated that they were unaware of the allegations until Thursday, March 10th, 2016. The investor has been released from his position. On Saturday, the company tweeted that while the allegations were “unproven and unrelated to Sequoia” they felt that “his departure was appropriate.”

According to Polaris, human trafficking is a form of modern slavery. It is a multi-billion dollar industry which affects millions of people worldwide. Victims of sex trafficking are usually lured by false promises of a job, relationship, or education and can often involve children under the age of 18. The situations victims of sex trafficking encounter can vary greatly, but all of them include a loss of freedom.

Attorney Brian Kent of the firm behind AbuseGuardian.com understands the devasting effects sexual abuse causes victims. Kent commented on the allegations in the suit by stating, “Sexual abuse is a crime based on power. While we must assume that everyone is innocent until they are proven guilty, we know that offenders of sexual abuse exploit trust and respect to violate their victims. I hope that the alleged victim can find peace and support on her long road to recovery.” Kent and his firm are devoted to treating each of their clients with compassion and individual attention. The firm is currently representing several clients in claims of sexual abuse.
