LipsigLawyers.com’s Thomas Moverman commented recently on an incident in Washington in which two workers were seriously hurt when they were hit with equipment. Moverman said that these incidents occur far too frequently and that he hopes the workers have a speedy recovery.
The Washington Post reported that the two men had been doing construction work at a Southeast Washington building when they were struck by a concrete pump around 3:52 p.m. The workers had been 15 feet in the air and working on the scaffolding of an Atlantic Street SE building when they were injured by the equipment. The men were brought down by a rescue basket and transported to the hospital, the report said.
These incidents tend to happen at an alarming rate. According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), there are about 2.3 million construction workers in the United States at any given time. Of those 2.3 million, almost 65 percent work on scaffolding. Statistics show that on average 60 deaths and 4,500 injuries occur while working on scaffolding every year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in 72 percent of workers that were injured in scaffolding accidents, the accident was caused either by the planking or support giving way, the employee slipping, or being struck by a falling object.
