E-Cigarette Explosions Investigated In Market Watch Article Following E-Cig Lawsuit Filings

LipsigLawyers.com reports on the details of a news release from Market Watch questioning the reasons behind recent reports of e-cigarette explosions. The article states that “A hospital in Seattle reports that e-cigarette injuries used to be a rare occurrence, but now the hospital is seeing at least one patient a month from e-cigarette related injuries.” As e-cigarette devices become increasingly popular, reports of them exploding increase as well. The general public has expressed mounting concerns over these devices and their overall safety.

E-cigarettes work by vaporizing nicotine-based liquids, often called “juice” by those who use the products. According to the release, statistics show that “One in four high-school students reported having used an e-cigarette in 2014, with one in eight saying they had smoked one in the last 30 days, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. E-cigarette sales were expected to hit $1.5 billion in 2015, according to Wells Fargo, with the market for vaporizing products--which includes e-cigarettes--reaching $10 billion by the end of 2018.”

Many have indicated that it is the lithium ion batteries of these devices that are actually exploding, and that these batteries are able to overheat. It was reported that the U.S. Fire Administration examined 25 media reports of these devices exploding between the years of 2009 and 2014, and determined that 80% of the incidents occurred while the e-cigarettes were charging.

Recently, a 17-year-old boy suffered painful burns when one of his classmate’s e-cigarette devices allegedly exploded in class. Another woman from New York reported driving when her e-cigarette battery exploded, burning her leg and launching the device into her dashboard.
