London, England -
Forest and Ray, based in Camden, London, UK, is shedding more light on wisdom teeth extractions and why they may become necessary in certain situations. Also known as third molars, the incomplete or lopsided emergence of these teeth can cause a variety of complications, and the clinic wishes to explain how dentists can help patients dealing with this issue.
Wisdom teeth grow in at the back of the mouth, behind the molars, and they can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to emerge fully. Some people may even experience a complete lack of ‘emergence,’ with their wisdom teeth failing to come in at all. However, it is not uncommon for them to come in at an angle, thereby pushing into the gum or even the neighboring tooth. Given that wisdom teeth first become visible in the late teen years or early adulthood for most people, this is also typically the age when patients need to see their dentist.
A wisdom tooth pushing into the gum or another tooth in this manner is known as impaction, which tends to be painful and can sometimes lead to infection. The fact that it can be difficult to brush these teeth only adds to the complications a patient may have to endure.
Forest and Ray explains that wisdom teeth removal may be recommended if certain criteria are met. Along with causing pain and swelling and making it difficult for the patient to bite down, wisdom teeth may simply become stuck in the jaw. If this is the case, the clinic will advise the patient to begin prepping for removal as soon as possible
There are certain signs a patient can be on the lookout for if they suspect wisdom teeth to be the culprit behind their recent jaw problems. Pain in the mouth or jaws is one of the best indicators that something is wrong, although this can be attributed to a number of conditions. However, the patient may also notice their face swelling, or they may find it hard to open their mouth. Forest and Ray points out that some dentists and oral surgeons may recommend extraction to prevent potential future complications — even if none are currently apparent.
The position of the wisdom tooth will be one factor that determines how exactly it is extracted. For instance, in the event it is fully erupted, the recommended treatment will be quick (completed under local anesthesia). Its relative simplicity also means it can be performed by a general dentist. However, if a diagnosis determines that it is growing irregularly, positioned horizontally or perhaps becoming angled toward or away from the closest tooth, a more complex procedure is required. Here, an oral surgeon’s involvement is necessary.
In both cases, the patient will be awake. Usually the dentist or oral surgeon may opt to use a local anesthetic. Patients may note here that one or more injections will be used to administer the anesthetic; however, they have little reason to expect this to result in excessive discomfort either as a numbing agent is applied to the gums prior to injection.
“You will feel pressure and similar sensations inside your mouth,” the clinic assures, “but no pain. You will also be awake and able to perceive the team working with you. They will monitor you closely to ensure the procedure is going ahead as planned.”
The patient’s experience immediately following wisdom teeth removal will depend on a variety of factors, including their tolerance of the local anesthetic, whether they have any other concerns they wish to discuss and so on. The clinic says the patient may spend their brief recovery time in the dental chair, and they may eventually be able to drive themselves home.
Recuperation may proceed without any side effects. While their mouth may take a few weeks to recover fully, the patient is likely to experience swelling and minor pain for a few days after the procedure. It is crucial that they follow their dentist’s instructions during this period to ensure recovery proceeds as expected.
Forest and Ray advises patients to schedule a consultation if they are concerned about their wisdom teeth. A full examination will uncover what the best course of action may be, and patients will always receive a full breakdown of their options.
