Aurora, Colorado -

Global Dog Breeds, a website that offers individual dog breed reviews, provides the details of different kinds of dogs of different sizes. One of the most searched categories of dogs all over the world are giant dog breeds. One of the dog breeds in this category is the Tibetan mastiff, which is a primitive breed believed to have existed since 1100 BC. This is a large working dog originating from the Himalayas and was later bred by the local people for the purpose of guarding their cattle or for use as a companion dog. Traditionally, they have served as guard dogs for Tibetan monasteries. This breed gained its first recognition by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2007.

The Tibetan mastiff is commonly regarded as a holy animal, which is supposed to bless the owner with good health and security. It is considered to be one of the rare breeds since there have been reports that there were less than 20 dogs of this breed remaining in Tibet. It is believed that Lord Buddha and Genghis Khan had owned this kind of dog.

The Tibetan mastiff has a natural instinct to protect its owner and property. They are even-tempered, thoughtful, courageous, and bold, which means they go well with other pets and kids in the home. They tend to bark for no apparent reason but their bark is one of their unique characteristics. It is important not to leave them alone for long periods of time because doing so may lead them to develop destructive behavior.

Meanwhile, the Akbash is another ancient dog breed that was bred in Turkey as an akbash guardian or livestock dog. It exhibits the characteristics of its ancestry, the sighthound and the mastiff. They are considered to be the national dog of Turkey and they are very intelligent but are not recommended for inexperienced owners. They are calm and clean and they are willing to risk their own lives just to protect their family.

The Akbash dogs serve as flock-guardian dogs and are very protective and selective, but little is known about their origin. They are very loyal and responsible with regards to protecting the children in their family and would usually keep the house under surveillance. They will initially howl or bark at strangers although they are not aggressive. They can work without any human guidance because of their independence and courage but they don’t tolerate other breeds. Thus, they should be kept separate from other breeds and be given their own space to play. The Akbash has to be exercised for a certain number of hours and taken for long walks or jogging, and allowed to play around in an area. Otherwise, it may become destructive, which is demonstrated by barking, digging, pacing, chewing, and more.

The Spanish mastiff is another ancient breed and just like the Akbash, little is known about its ancestry. It is believed that Phoenician traders brought them to the Iberian Peninsula about 2,000 years ago. They were then used as herding and livestock guardian dogs in Europe. It is believed that they were also used in battles between the Spaniards against native people. And because they were used as war dogs, they are more ferocious than other dog breeds at the present time.

The Spanish mastiff puppies are gentle and can get along well with kids and strangers. However, they need to be supervised when they are with children because these are giant dogs and can knock down the baby when excited. They can serve as protector of their family during adverse situations. However, they are more suitable for village life rather than in a condo because they have a very loud voice that can disturb the neighbors. They don’t have high energy and walking them twice a day inside a fenced yard where they can play would be enough exercise for them.
