A lingual frenectomy is typically performed on infants with tongue ties. Tongue ties happen when the lingual frenulum (the thin tissue that connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth) is too short—thereby limiting the tongue’s ability to move and making it difficult to swallow or speak. In infants, this can lead to breastfeeding problems. In children or adults, tongue ties can result in speech difficulties, jaw pain, or underbites.

Tongue ties occur in approximately 5% of babies, are more prevalent in males than females, and tend to run in families. Tongue ties often occur with lip ties. Patients are considered “lip tied” when the labial frenulum (the tissue that attaches to the upper lip to the gums) is very tight or large.

Lip ties make it difficult to move the upper lip. This can lead to breastfeeding difficulties, speech problems, gaps between front teeth, and difficulties cleaning teeth and gums. The procedure to correct lip ties is called a maxillary frenectomy.
