Lakefront Family Dentistry is celebrating Oral Health Month during June. Oral Health Month was created by the American Dental Association in partnership with Colgate to remind families that establishing healthy habits such as brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist are some of the keys to health and happiness.

Experts at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association recommend that children visit the dentist once their first tooth erupts or by age one.

At a child’s first visit to the dentist, Dr. Phillipe and Dr. Hauser will provide parents with information on issues such as teething, baby bottles and tooth decay, and how finger-sucking and pacifiers affect teeth. This visit is also an opportunity to provide a gentle cleaning and help a child get accustomed to visiting the dentist.

Visiting the dentist as a toddler is critical because it provides Dr. Phillipe and Dr. Hauser with an opportunity to monitor and evaluate the development of a child’s teeth, including any oral issues that may be developing. A frenectomy for babies is offered using the Solea Laser technology that requires no anesthesia, and the procedure takes just 30 to 60 seconds.

“A common misconception is that baby teeth aren’t important because they will eventually fall out,” said Dr. Phillipe. “However, early loss of baby teeth can cause long-term problems such as causing permanent teeth to erupt improperly. Children may also have problems with speaking and chewing if they lose baby teeth prematurely.”

As children get older, Lakefront Family Dentistry can provide a variety of services designed to help protect children’s teeth, including sealants and fluoride treatments. The office can also perform frenectomies using the Solea Laser.
