Michigan expungement attorney Paul J. Tafelski (https://www.michigandefenselaw.com/blog/how-much-does-an-expungement-cost-in-michigan/) releases a new article explaining the cost of expungement in the state of Michigan. The lawyer mentions that if a person has been convicted of a crime in Michigan, they may already understand how it adversely impacts their life even after they have completed their sentence.

“In the United States, nine out of 10 employers, four out of five landlords, and three out of five colleges screen out applicants with criminal records through publicly accessed background checks. Consequently, a criminal record can still remain a serious barrier even for those who have paid their debt, remained conviction-free, and want to move on with their lives,” the Michigan expungement attorney says.

The lawyer mentions that Michigan became the third state to implement clean slate laws to help more individuals move on after their convictions by getting their criminal record expunged from the public record. Michigan’s Clean Slate package is also one of the most extensive of any in the country.

Attorney Paul J. Tafelski adds that the actual financial cost of an expungement is minimal. The individual is responsible for fingerprinting, getting a certified copy of each conviction, and paying a fee of $50 to the State of Michigan. It is important to keep in mind that the process of expungement needs to be completed correctly. If not, the individual may have to wait for another three years to apply again.

In the article, the lawyer adds, “While an expungement can be completed without the assistance of an attorney, it is not recommended. The court has great latitude in determining who is granted expungement and who is not. An incorrect application or lack of preparation can result in a denial by the court, and the individual will have to wait to apply again.”

Lastly, attorney Tafelski emphasizes the importance of having a skilled defense lawyer when it comes to matters such as expunging a criminal record. An experienced lawyer may be able to help the client receive a favorable outcome and a second chance in life.
