San Francisco, Calif. — In the next 20 years, FedEx plans to have a fully electric fleet, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. As a FedEx-authorized ship center, PO Plus is proud to be working with an innovative and sustainable organization.
Because FedEx recognizes that they have a large environmental impact with over 200,000 vehicles on the roads, they are constantly seeking ways to reduce their carbon footprint. They were one of the first companies to introduce an electric car in the early 90s (which ran off a lead-acid battery). Furthermore, they became the first mail delivery company to use hybrid vehicles in 2003 as part of their commitment to finding new energy sources.
By 2025, half of all FedEx delivery vehicle purchases will be electric as part of their goal to be carbon neutral. They plan to only purchase electric vehicles by 2030 and have every pickup and delivery vehicle in their fleet fully converted to electric by 2040.
The question as to how FedEx plans to be able to effectively charge their fleet was answered in a recent FedEx article on their website: “FedEx is actively collaborating with utility companies to develop more sustainable grids that will support the infrastructure needed for the large-scale adoption and charging of electric delivery vehicles. We're also working to forecast energy needed to support this EV infrastructure. We will work with utility companies to help ensure grid supply can meet the demand of EV charging infrastructure without negatively impacting market conditions in local communities. We understand the need for everyone to benefit from cleaner forms of energy; that's why we intend to explore working with energy suppliers to identify fair and equitable approaches to the transition to cleaner energy.”
