San Francisco, Calif. – On Oct. 9, the U.S. Postal Service announced the proposed shipping price changes scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 24, 2021. Mailing services product prices approved by the Postal Service Board of Governors are based on the consumer price index. The U.S. Postal Service rates are periodically increased to not only provide the agency with necessary revenue, but to keep prices for mailing services competitive. PO Plus, a San Francisco USPS shipping store, is sharing information on these rate increases to keep their community informed.

In a recent news release from the U.S. Postal Service, proposed mailing service price increases were included for five products. All flats weighing one ounce or less will remain the same price: one dollar. The biggest rate change listed is the price of each additional ounce past the one-ounce limit for letters. The price will move from 15 cents to 20 cents per ounce. All letters of one ounce or less will remain the same price: 55 cents. Additionally, metered letters and domestic postcards will see small increases to 51 cents and 36 cents, respectively. Overall, first-class mail will see price increases of approximately 1.8 percent, whereas all other categories will see a price increase of 1.5 percent. The Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) will review the price changes before they go into effect.

Despite the proposed rate increases for the new year, the U.S. Postal Service still offers some of the most competitive postal rates for letter-mail. In addition, the U.S. Postal Service does not add surcharges for regular Saturday deliveries, fuel expenses or residential deliveries.
