Seattle, WA – As the U.S. adjusts to the new normal, one accommodation that city dwellers may have taken for granted is the ability to find a public restroom. Before the pandemic, Seattle libraries, parks, and community centers offered public restrooms. In addition, one could visit a coffee shop or restaurant, make a purchase, and use their restroom.

Covid-19 brought on Washington’s, “Stay Home, Stay Healthy,” order, and libraries, parks, restaurants, and community centers closed. With these closures, the availability of public restrooms disappeared.

For Seattle’s large homeless population, and for delivery and metro drivers around town, these restroom closures created a severe problem. Some resorted to going behind buildings, in alleys and wooded areas, or to create their own port-a-potties.

Months later, restaurants and coffee shops re-opened, but allowed take-out only so reastrooms were inaccessible to customers. A few parks opened restrooms during the day but locked them in the evening for safety reasons.

Raymark Plumbing and Sewer, a trusted local plumber in Seattle, WA, is highlighting the steps the City of Seattle and other organizations have taken to remedy this issue.

The city recently opened six hygiene stations located in Seattle parks. These stations offer toilets, sinks, and soap. These are critical not only for the use of the toilet but for washing hands during the pandemic.

The Low Income Housing Institute supports three Urban Rest Stops in the city. These offer restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities for those that are homeless.

In mid-April 2020, five Seattle Public Library locations opened their restrooms. Seattle Public Utilities added 12 hygiene stations, and Seattle Parks re-opened 50 park facilities. Some parks have portable sani-cans and portable handwashing stations that are available for use 24/7.

In addition, restrooms are available at City Hall and the Seattle Center (where the Space Needle is located). Plus, many community centers provide toilets and showers that are open to the public.
