Education website Lesson Plan Source (LPS) is reaching out to the wider community of teachers and educators to announce that they have resources to help teach the life cycle of a butterfly to students. Since the website was founded in 2004, Lesson Plan Source has been gathering fun and functional resources for teachers and educators across a variety of subjects.

The Life Cycle of a Butterfly lesson plan contains a variety of resources that will provide a comprehensive outline to teaching students of first, second and third grades the stages that occur in the life cycle of a butterfly. Lesson Plan Source recommends pairing their resources with a butterfly growing kit to further solidify its effectiveness.

The materials that come with the lesson plan include a life cycle of a butterfly diagram, sequencing cards and a student reader. The website recommends using the diagram as a part of the lesson’s anticipatory set to introduce the life cycle. Further, the diagram can also be laminated and displayed with the butterfly growing kit. The sequencing cards should be paired with the writing paper to engage students in a written recall of the stages in the cycle. Lesson Plan Source says that a copy of the student reader should be provided to each student, and they should be given time to cut along the dotted lines to separate the pages. Then, using the numbers at the bottom of each page, students can place their pages in order and staple along the left side to form a book.

The Lesson Plan Source website also has recommendations as to how to implement the Life Cycle of a Butterfly lesson plan. The website says, “As a small or whole group activity, distribute Student Readers to each child. Read through the book, discussing vocabulary and information provided on each page, and asking questions to help students make connections. After reading as a group, assign students independent work. Have them reread the book and answer the questions at the back of the book. Once children are done, review the answers as a class, or have students turn in their work for your review. Additional copies can be made and distributed at the end of your life cycle study to be used as a final assessment.”

The website also recommends using Butterfly Growing Kits with the lesson plan as they offer a fantastic way to provide a real-world experience for students. Lesson Plan Sources advises that pairing it with a science journal for students to hypothesize and track results can also have great results. The website reads, “If you haven't grown your own butterflies before, you really are in for a treat. The process of watching, firsthand, the metamorphosis that takes place in these little creatures is amazing! There are several growing kits on the market. Be sure to read the fine print when purchasing as it is common for brands to send you a voucher for purchasing your caterpillars separate from the kit.”

Lesson Plan Sources was created by a teacher named Deanna and her husband, who have been maintaining and upgrading the website since 2004. Their goal is to create a place that offers fun and functional resources for both teachers and students. They are proud to state that, as they grow their team at Lesson Plan Sources, the quantity and quality of resources they provide have only been increasing in kind.

Deanna says, “My journey over the years has taken me from the mainstream classroom to a private school setting, to resource room, and now to the homeschool room. As a certified educator, I possess a Bachelor's degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences, a Post-Baccalaureate in Elementary Education, and a Master's degree in Special Education (Prek-8). As a mommy, I possess three little loves (toddler-third grade) that remind me every day of why I pursued teaching many years ago. I love children and am passionate about teaching them, regardless of where the learning takes place. My hope is that with each LPS resource you use, you will appreciate the work behind it and it will bless you and your precious children.”
