Los Angeles, Nevada based home and kitchen goods manufacturer Sunsella has shared their thoughts on PayPal’s outgoing Chief Operating Officer Bill Ready joining Google as the multinational tech giant’s new commerce chief.

Ready has been working for PayPal for about six years now, having joined the company back in 2013 when they acquired Ready’s startup, the payments gateway Braintree (and its app, Venmo), for a stunning $800 million sum. At PayPal, Ready held the role of Chief Executive Office of the Braintree and Venmo divisions for around a year and a half before he rose through the ranks, holding several Senior Vice President roles before being named PayPal’s Chief Operating Office in 2016.

Though the news of Ready’s exit from the payments giant was revealed earlier this year in June, there were no announcements as to the executive’s plans following his departure from the company. However, the exit seems to be a mutually amicable parting, with PayPal’s CEO Dan Schulman praising his subordinate in the June announcement. The announcement of Bill Ready’s end-of-the-year departure, however, did affect PayPal adversely as the company saw a 2% drop in its shares.

Ready confirmed his plans to join Google in a December 11 tweet, which read that he is, “Excited to build the future of commerce with Sundar Pichai, Prabhakar and the team at Google beginning in January!” In a statement to TechCrunch, Ready also said, “I’ve long admired how Google has enabled access to the digital economy for everyone. Google has been making world-class commerce capabilities universally accessible to partners of all sizes, and I look forward to furthering that mission.”

It has also been confirmed that Ready’s new position at Google won’t see him compete with PayPal, as his role does not involve payments. According to TechCrunch, his new role will have him reporting directly to Google's SVP of ads, commerce and payments, Prabhakar Raghavan, and he will, “focus on leading Google’s vision, strategy and delivery of its commerce products. However, the role will see Ready working in close partnership with both the advertising and payments operations."

Mike Law, a representative for Sunsella, comments, “Google has always been this ever-expanding conglomeration of the best of the best in the tech industry and, while PayPal has already laid claim to Bill Ready’s brainchild, Braintree, it’s not like Google won’t have any use for a man of Ready’s talents. With such an esteemed position at the world’s biggest tech company, I’m sure Ready is set to give the company his best.”

Law continues, “When Ready joined PayPal, it was immediately obvious as to how Ready could help them. After all, Braintree was a great company when it was inducted into the folds of PayPal. While it is not immediately obvious what Ready can do for Google, have no doubt that Google surely has plans for him. While Google is not necessarily playing around in the payments field yet, they’ve got a neat ace up their sleeves now if they want to try their luck at it in the future. Ready’s role may even have him assist Google as they gear up for their eventual showdown with Amazon, a company which Google considers a genuine threat.”
