Luann Savage, Senior Manager in Send Out Cards, was interviewed on Business Innovators Radio to talk about some basic information one should know when considering joining a multilevel marketing (MLM) company.
As an entrepreneur that has chosen a MLM business as her vehicle, Luann has had years to learn and understand some of the main issues people encounter regarding such a business.

Within it she shares one of her profound insights, “You need to find a MLM that feels like the right match for you. It’s like finding the right spouse. Because in a sense, you’ll be married to it.” Before one invests in a business, he/she must do some research – understand the product/service being offered and the compensation plan. By understanding the compensation plan, one will comprehend how to make money within the MLM.
She explains that there are 2 ways to make money 1) selling the product/service and 2) recruiting people into the business (aka building a downline). A problem Luann notes that people encounter is that they fail to work both sides of the business. They either concentrate on selling the product/service or on building the downline.
Savage states that the best way to avoid this issue is to "...know the products and the benefits of using the products or services. Hopefully you can find a business with a product that the majority of people can use. And you should find out how long the company’s been in business and be able to explain the compensation plan clearly." This knowledge will help one to confidently work both sides of the business.
She also discusses some of the common misconceptions people have regarding multilevel marketing – if it’s illegal or some kind of a get quick rich scheme.
