Bartosz Beda says, “When I began creating ‘Disinformation I,’ my mind was teeming with images and philosophies that had influenced me over the years. One of them was the ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ opening scene that resonated with me. How a discovery escalates the monkey into a position of power, and this thread of hierarchy is incorporated into the fabric of our daily existence, often eluding our conscious recognition.”

“Disinformation I” presents the image of an apparently mischievous chimpanzee in shades of green and stares at the viewer with a sly grin. The artist has revealed that as he started to paint, it was Rene Descartes’ famous quote, “I think, therefore I am,” that came to his mind. The chimpanzee emerges from a monochromatic landscape of green and presents something that is more than a portrait, blurring the distinction between the viewed and the viewer to allow the viewer to question the integrity of their perceptions.

The image of the chimpanzee appears to emerge from a green background to emphasize the artificial separation of the primate and its environment. This separation represents the distinction between information and disinformation that results into a distorted view of reality. This piece of art is intended to present a challenge to the viewer to question their perception of reality. A person’s superficial layers of reality can easily confuse the senses, showing how disinformation is prevalent in today’s world. Taking inspiration from Carl Sagan, the artist contemplated how the stars are a source of wonder of people and how they have served as a tool for control in religion, politics and science.
