Virgin Islands Neurology - St. Thomas, a neurology practice based in the U.S. Virgin Islands, has announced that they are offering Botox treatment for hormonal migraines. Hormonal migraines are one of the most common types of migraine that affect many people, particularly women who are taking hormonal medications or are suffering from hormonal changes that are related to menopause and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Those who are suffering from hormonal migraines may be able to find relief from Botox treatment.

Gary Starkman, MD from Virgin Islands Neurology - St. Thomas says, “Hormonal migraines, also known as menstrual migraines, are caused by changes in hormone levels that can occur during menstrual cycles, pregnancy, menopause, and other stages of life. Hormonal imbalances can lead to fluctuating levels of estrogen, which can trigger inflammation and pain signals in the brain. This could cause a person to experience migraine symptoms such as throbbing headaches and extreme sensitivity to light or sound. They affect about 25% of women who suffer from migraines and can be much more severe than regular migraine headaches.”

The symptoms of hormonal migraines can include nausea and vomiting, intense throbbing pain on one side of the head, exhaustion, and extreme sensitivity to light, smell, and sound. Some of the usual causes of hormonal migraines include: birth control pills, menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause, and hormone replacement therapy.

Botox injections use small quantities of botulinum toxin for certain areas of the face to block nerve signals in facial muscles to decrease the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet. However, Botox has also been approved by the FDA for the treatment of chronic migraine pain, strabismus (crossed eyes), excessive sweating, and cervical dystonia (muscle spasms in the neck).

In a clinical study involving over 1,300 people with chronic migraines, those who got Botox injections every 12 weeks were able to decrease their migraine days by up to nine days per month, in contrast to the control group over a period of three months. In addition, there is no indication that drug resistance developed during the duration of the study. Furthermore, other types of headache may also be treated with Botox, such as: sinus headaches, tension headaches, chronic migraines, vestibular migraine, and cluster headaches.

However, while Botox is a safe procedure that has been approved by the FDA, but patients may experience some minor pain or discomfort a the injection site during the process. Most people reported only experiencing mild discomfort and no long-term problems. However, there are a number of potential side effects, such as: muscle weakness, bruising at the injection site, injection site pain, headaches, nausea, dry mouth neck stiffness, neck pain, and fatigue.
