ReVIDA® Recovery Morristown, a ReVIDA® Recovery Center based in Morristown, TN, has recently published a blog post that warns about the risk of experiencing an overdose of fentanyl-laced pills. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more powerful than morphine. Because of its strength as an opioid, drug suppliers often substitute a small amount of fentanyl for a bigger amount of heroin, morphine, methamphetamines, or other drugs, without making their customers aware. It is all about maximizing their profit and getting their customers dependent in a shorter period of time. These fentanyl-laced pills are practically impossible to detect because fentanyl is colorless, odorless, and it is water-soluble.

The problem with these fentanyl-laced pills is that suppliers do not accurately measure the amount of fentanyl that they are putting in. In fact, they have no idea of the proper amount or dosage, which means there is a high risk that their customers may be taking too much fentanyl. As little as the size of a grain or two of salt of fentanyl can cause an overdose.

A spokesperson for ReVIDA® Recovery says, “We know that not everyone who experiences a fentanyl overdose is even aware that they’re taking fentanyl. That is why we are here to bring awareness about this situation and prevent an overdose of fentanyl-laced pills.”

This is an important concern that drug users need to look into. Fentanyl can be mixed into any kind of pill but the most common ones are oxycodone or hydrocodone, benzodiazepines like diazepam, alprazolam, and clonazepam, MDMA or ecstasy, and amphetamine pills. And recently, drug suppliers have come up with brightly colored pills, blocks, or powders that look very much like candy but taking just one of them can result in an overdose.

The result is that deaths from overdose due to fentanyl-laced pills have become commonplace and the number of deaths due to fentanyl overdose has been rising every year. Statistics indicate that in 2020, 53,480 people died because of a fentanyl overdose, compared to 33,725 deaths in 2019. This represents a 59 percent rise in deaths caused by fentanyl overdose.

Some of the typical signs of a fentanyl overdose are: vomiting, tiny, pinpoint pupils, choking, fainting or loss of consciousness, limp limbs or body, cold/clammy skin, gurgling sounds, and discoloration in lips, fingernails, or under the eyes. Short-term side effects of fentanyl use include slowed breathing, fatigue, slurred speech, confusion, urinary retention, impairment in decision-making, and gastrointestinal distress (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation). Long-term use of fentanyl may result in sleep apnea, bowel obstructions, mood disorders like anxiety, depression, or bipolar, reproductive issues, hormonal imbalance, chronic constipation, and heart attack, stroke, or heart failure.
