76 Year Old Grandmother Invents Raincoat For The Elderly

Downpour Defender, a new raincoat style developed by a 76 year old grandmother, has recently been released to the general public. The raincoat is short in back, designed to be comfortable for users while seated, and long in the front so that it covers down to the ankles.

Vivian Hooten, designer of the raincoat, says "I didn't like getting to my doctor's appointments feeling wet from the rain, so I came up with this design."

The raincoat is designed with Velcro closures at the neck and around the legs for easy closing and release. It will not catch in the mechanism of a wheelchair or mobility scooter, and is constructed of heavy PVC so that it doesn't flap in the wind. "It's designed specifically for elderly people, those who are in wheelchairs and scooters," says Hooten.

Hooten says she designed the raincoat as a solution for disabled people who find it a bit difficult to weather the storm when they are traveling out and about. It is a solution that is meant to provide more mobility and freedom for those in wheelchairs during rainstorms.

Hooten also states that her Downpour Defender was created with affordability in mind, while the materials used are of the highest possible quality and designed to last.

Hooten became disabled when she was hit by a car while sitting on a park bench. After years of rehab, she was able to return to work in a wheelchair. She searched for a raincoat that would keep her dry without getting caught in the wheels of her chair, and states that the prices for products available were out of her price range, which is ultimately what led her to create the Downpour Defender.

"I just wanted to be able to help others like me; others who need protection from the rain and who can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars for a raincoat," Hooten states.
