Bloomington, IL based Insurance Covered CPAP has published new materials to help the community of CPAP users determine when their supplies have to be replaced. While most will be aware that certain disposable components are not designed to be reused, the company says that the other parts of their gear do indeed wear out. It is important for everyone to understand how long each part of their gear is expected to last.

In an article titled ‘When to Replace Your CPAP Supplies,’ the company states, “Replacing your CPAP supplies is an important part of getting the most out of your CPAP therapy. In order for your CPAP to work effectively and efficiently, you need to understand what your replacement schedule should look like and keep on top of it to ensure you have clean supplies that will keep your CPAP working at an optimal level.”

Notably, the CPAP machine itself can only last so long, but this fortunately has the longest life span of a user’s entire setup. Insurance Covered CPAP says that a user’s CPAP or Bi-Pap can be expected to last around five years, so they are likely to get plenty of use out of it before they need to start looking for a new machine. They also add that the humidifier should not be considered to be as durable; it will need to be replaced more frequently.

Some supplies will need to be replaced twice a year. The company says that headgear and chin straps, water chambers and non-disposable filters should be replaced every six months for ideal usage. They also clarify that, “The water chamber is especially important to replace because that’s where bacteria can grow thanks to the warm, damp nature of the unit. Additionally, you should soak your humidifier chamber in a solution of 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water for 15-20 minutes once a week and then rinse with distilled water.”

The supplies that need to be replaced most often are the standard and heated tubing, masks without headgear, full face cushions, nasal cushions and nasal pillows and disposable filters. This is due to the fact that parts of these supplies are exposed to the germs in a person’s breath every time they are used, and they are virtually impossible to clean thoroughly. As such, germs can colonize in sections and eventually pose a severe health hazard, especially as they will receive a direct path to the user’s respiratory system.

Insurance Covered CPAP clarifies that the nasal cushions, nasal pillow and disposable filters actually have to be replaced every two weeks. The company simply suggests that six of each be purchased every three months for convenience, and they say this is already what many in the community are accustomed to doing.

Overall, the company says hygiene tends to be the biggest reason why a person’s CPAP supplies have to be replaced so often. However, the machine and other components experience wear and tear over time as well, which means they also have a limited life span. The company says there is little that can be done to correct the former issue, but routine maintenance and sanitization can help extend a component’s lifespan to some degree. The article states, “Taking good care of your supplies means they will last longer. We suggest getting into a routine of cleaning your supplies regularly, including sanitizing your mask and tube daily. This will keep you healthier and make your CPAP equipment more efficient and effective.”
