Las Vegas, NV based Frux Home and Yard is pleased to bring the Silicone Takeback Program from Net Zero Co. to their community’s attention. As the company’s silicone oven mitts are among their most popular products, they have been looking for ways to help their customers recycle their mitts once they reach the end of their lifespan. Today, Frux Home and Yard is delighted to share that their search has come to a fruitful end.

Silicone has many advantages over other materials, and this is part of the reason why Frux Home and Yard chose to use it in the construction of their highly popular oven mitts. While many might expect modern mitts to contain plastic, the company asserts that silicone is a far more viable alternative because it does not contain the sort of harmful chemicals that are known to linger in plastic items, such as phthalates and BPA. Manufacturing silicone is a more environmentally-friendly process as well, particularly given that it does not require crude oil to be mined (as is the case with plastic).

One drawback with silicone is that it is not biodegradable. However, it is durable enough to have a long lifespan, and it does not break down into microplastics, thereby reducing its impact on oceans and the environment as a whole (which may be of particular concern to some given that microplastics have been discovered in human tissue). Most crucially, it can be recycled, but Frux Home and Yard is aware that it is not easy for the average person to recycle their old silicone cookware and other silicone products. This is why the company has been searching long and hard for an answer to this problem.

With the Net Zero Co. Silicone Takeback Program, Frux Home and Yard’s customers can now get more involved in the low waste lifestyle. The company states, “While our oven mitts are made to last, we know they won't be with you forever. We encourage all of our customers to use the Silicone Takeback Program for when their oven mitts are no longer wanted.”

According to Net Zero Co., silicone products can be recycled via TerraCycle, another organization that is working hard to reduce the world’s waste. However, it is difficult for the average consumer to reach facilities of this kind, so Net Zero Co. collects all unwanted items on their behalf. Frux Home and Yard explains that customers only have to get in touch with Net Zero Co. (via email or through the contact form on their website) and inform them about the products they would like to have recycled. Following this, Net Zero Co. will email the customer a (pre-paid) return label that they can attach to a package filled with all their used, unwanted silicone products and ship over to the organization’s warehouse. The customer can then rest assured that the items will be responsibly recycled with TerraCycle.

Frux Home and Yard is proud of their products, and they have the customer reviews to back up their claims. For instance, one Amazon review customer reports that they attempted to switch to a different synthetic material after using cloth mitts. This material quickly wore out, however, and needed multiple repairs. The customer then happened upon Frux Home and Yard’s silicone oven mitts. As an excerpt from the review explains, “I can pick up a cookie sheet by the edge, with no threat of disaster. They are really flexible. The mitts run pretty high up my arm, so there is no need to be extra-diligent when taking things out of the oven. I even love the way the color matches my kitchen decor.”

Another review touches on the mitts’ high degree of heat insulation. It says, “I never thought I would be writing a review on oven gloves, ever! However, during lockdown, I started baking sourdough, and using a cast iron skillet at 260 degrees was an issue for our existing ones. They did not give heat protection and started smoking! These ones are great — good grip with the silicone, no heat transmission through the glove and wipe down clean is so easy. Good length to protect the lower forearm too, and [there is a] comfy lining inside. At this price, they are a steal. 4 Stars for durability only because it's too early to say, otherwise 5 Stars all the way.”

Frux Home and Yard looks forward to hearing more from this customer once they discover that the mitts are designed to endure extensive use in the kitchen. The team also hopes that this customer (and others like them) will turn to Net Zero Co. and their Silicone Takeback Program once the mitts have seen their last use. Those who would like to learn more about the mitts or the takeback program are welcome to contact Mike MacDonald of Frux Home and Yard.
