Maldives 4K

The Maldives is an archipelagic state, a designation for island countries that consist of an archipelago, in South Asia. It is one of the most geographically dispersed sovereign states in the world. The country is made up of 1,192 coral islands grouped in a double chain of 26 atolls. The atolls comprise dry land spanning almost 300 square kilometers spread out over roughly 90,000 square kilometers of water. More than 80% of the land is composed of coral islands. The country has a very low average natural ground height above sea level of only 1.5 meters. The country is at risk of being submerged due to rising sea levels caused by climate change. According to some estimates, if the current increase in sea level continues, the country would become uninhabitable by 2100.

Tourism, the country’s most prominent and most profitable industry, was not always the primary source of income for the country’s residents. Its beauty was mostly unappreciated by the rest of the world until the early 1970s when the country embarked on a transformation of its economy as it moved to create direct and indirect employment opportunities in tourism-related industries. The gamble paid off as now tourism accounts for 28% of the GDP and over 90% of the government tax revenue comes from import duties and tourism-related taxes.

Over 1.7 million tourists visited the islands in 2019. Popular destinations to visit in the country include Male, its capital also known as the “King’s Island”, Addu Atoll, Fuladhoo Beach, and Gan. The Maldives is also a tempting visit because visitors to the country do not need to apply for a visa pre-arrival, regardless of their country of origin. The only criteria required are that they have a valid passport, proof of onward travel, and the money to be self-sufficient while in the country.

Around the 12th century, the region was part of an Islamic sultanate and it maintained strong relationships with kingdoms in Asia and Africa. After the mid 16th century, European influence in the region steadily increased culminating with the Maldives becoming a British protectorate in 1887. It was granted freedom from the United Kingdom in 1965.

The region has a warm tropical monsoon climate. Most of the year, the temperature is hot and humid. The presence of the large South Asian landmass to the north causes differential heating of land and water leading to a rush of moisture-rich air from the Indian Ocean which leads to the southwest monsoon.

The video posted by Destination Paradise has over 7500 views on Youtube. The video does a good job of capturing the majesty of the tropical island and presenting it in a digestible format that encourages those who are looking for a vacation spot to consider the island nation as their next getaway. The video has plenty of encouraging comments left by viewers who were enthralled by the shots in the video. Readers can view many more scenic relaxation videos from locations all around the world such as New York City, Africa, England, Portugal, Turkey, Romania, and others on the Destination Paradise Youtube channel.
