Milton, FLA. - With the support of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, Audi has completed a pilot project to recycle mixed automotive plastic waste using a chemical auto recycling process. Plastic is used in many parts of automobiles, such as fuel tanks, airbag covers, and radiator grilles. Audi says it can convert plastic waste into pyrolysis oil so that it can be used in future Audi vehicles as a raw material for producing high-quality plastic components. As a salvage yard, Butler’s is proud to see such a large car company beginning to recycle.

A car's plastic components are subject to immense stress due to the strict safety, heat resistance, and quality requirements they must meet. Currently, they are only made from virgin plastic, which mechanical recycling of plastic cannot replicate. Audi conducted a chemical recycling test to investigate whether mixed automotive plastic fractions can be sent back into a resource-friendly cycle.

Several pilot tests conducted by Audi have indicated that new pyrolysis oil components are of the same high quality as virgin materials. In this way, plastic components with high levels of stress can be created using pyrolysis oil and then reused in the automotive manufacturing process.

Carmakers, such as Audi, can reduce their fossil resource consumption by recycling plastic waste and, in turn, reduce the number of additional fossil resources required. As a result of the chemical recycling process, Audi can enhance the amount of recycled plastic used in its vehicles. A follow-up project has already been planned with its partner for the development of a chemical recycling process for industrial applications.
