Senior Care Center, an online resource that helps elders locate, apply to, and move into senior homes all across the country, has shared an article about a new program caring for seniors from the Area Agency on Aging, Region One, in Phoenix, Arizona.

An Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is a public or private non-profit agency, designated by the state to address the needs and concerns of all older persons at the regional and local levels. It is a generic term and has been used by many local organizations all over the country. The Area Agency on Aging, Region One, in Phoenix, Arizona, offers a large variety of programs and services that enhance the quality of life for residents of Maricopa County, Arizona. It provides more than 50 programs and services to over 114,000 people each year in Maricopa County including 40,000 callers to the 24-hour Senior Help Line.

The organization is helmed by Mary Lynn Kasunic, the President, CEO, and Executive Director, of Region One. She has led the agency to a position of prominence in aging services on a national level. In 2008, the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (N4A) presented Ms. Kasunic with its Excellence in Leadership Award, selected from among the directors of 622 area agencies nationwide. In July 2019, the Phoenix Business Journal recognized Ms. Kasunic as one of 20 Names to Know in non-profits.

The name of the newly released program is AGEconnect. The program helps older adults and their caregivers explore options, formulate a plan and navigate systems with a goal to keep older adults in their homes for as long as possible. It provides a comprehensive in-home discussion about the individual’s current status and ongoing needs, a detailed plan based on those needs, and ongoing follow-up and support. On a related note, readers can click here to learn about programs offered by the Senior Care Center to help seniors and their family members find the same level of care at a nursing home or assisted living center.

Area Agency on Aging, Region One says that elderly people are most happy when they are given the independence and freedom of being able to live peacefully in their own homes. Those kinds of freedom are not available to them if they move into a retirement home. However, this becomes complicated as they grow older and feel the need to use senior care services such as medical care and therapy. The AGEconnect program ensures that seniors are able to stay at home as long as they are comfortable living by themselves until they require a higher level of care like that provided by a nursing home. Any proceeds generated through AGEconnect are reinvested in services, resources, and programs for seniors in need and their caregivers.

When talking about the program, the director Mary Lynn Kasunic says, “AGEconnect takes the agency’s unmatched knowledge about resources for seniors and their caregivers to the next level of service. AGEconnect focuses exclusively on the well-being of seniors through comprehensive assessments and customized care plans based on their individual, specific needs. This is a collaboration with family caregivers, whether they’re in Arizona or living in another state, to help manage current needs and to prepare for what might lie ahead. These services are important for both older adults and those who love and care for them. We find that people most often look to our knowledge and expertise about navigating the system and resources that will work best for their specific needs. With the exponential growth in our aging population, AGEconnect is a big step in building that menu of service and in providing peace of mind for those individuals who are most affected.”
