During the heat of summer, most homeowners dread the high energy bills that come along with the hot temperatures. One sure way to have a positive impact on air conditioning usage is to improve the insulation in the home. Insulation will keep the cool air in and the hot air out. One of the best insulation choices for a home is spray foam insulation. RT Construction now provides this service to homeowners.

Even though this type of insulation is more expensive than other types, the benefits of spray foam insulation can save homeowners money long term.

Spray foam insulation

Spray foam insulation is a two-part liquid insulation material that insulates and air seals wherever it is applied. The liquid material comes in two large 55-gallon drums that are kept separate until applied at the job site. The two liquids travel up through a heated hose to the spray gun where they are combined to create the foam. The foam expands within seconds to fill the cavity surface.

There are two types of foam insulation, open-cell, and closed-cell. Both are primarily used in residential construction. Open-cell spray foam insulation is used for interior applications such as the underside of roof decks, attics, and basement walls. It is known to reduce noise.

Closed-cell spray foam insulation can be used for interior and exterior spaces. It is particularly good for small areas. Closed-cell spray foam is a recognized flood-resistant material by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, due to its ability to reject a lot of water.

Why Spray Foam Insulation Is a Good Investment

Although traditional insulation materials cost less than spray foam insulation, they do not provide the same standard of sealing that spray foam insulation does.

Lowers Energy Bills: Spray foam insulation’s ability to tightly seal air allows it to create a barrier to decrease air leakage from a home. When spray foam is applied correctly, it fills all cracks and crevices, immediately expanding to fill those small spaces, thus blocking the heat and cold.

Spray foam insulation assists in limiting moisture vapor from entering and escaping the home. This reduces the load on heating and cooling systems, hence lowering heating and cooling costs.

Reduces the Amount of Pollen and Allergens: Since air can’t penetrate the walls once the spray foam insulation is applied, it can drastically reduce the amount of pollen and allergens inside. Family members who suffer from allergies or respiratory conditions won’t have to worry about constant sneezing, a trip to the doctor, or more money spent on allergy medicine.

Prevents Costly Water Damage: Sealing a home with spray foam insulation helps keep moisture from entering through the walls. No moisture means a reduced risk of mold and mildew growth. The less water that gets through the walls, the smaller the chance that loved ones will develop health issues due to mold and mildew. Closed-cell spray foam works as a barrier against large quantities of water which will save homeowners money from costly water damage repairs.

Stops Bug and Rodent Infestations: Small holes and cracks in any home are an open invitation to ants, bugs, and small rodents. Spray foam insulation can fill the smallest holes to prevent insects from entering. Once the spray foam dries, it forms a hard barrier that deters pesky bugs and critters.

By keeping away insects and rodents, it also reduces the chances of getting sick from rodent waste and having to hire a professional exterminator to remove the bugs.

Increases the Sturdiness of Walls: One of the biggest benefits of foam spray insulation is the sturdiness that it adds to the structure of the house. Because of its density and hard barrier, the walls are strengthened. It protects the attic and roof during strong storms. The added layer of protection that spray foam insulation provides can also increase the value of a home.
