Santa Clara, Ca.- The Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, declared a mandatory quarantine for all residents of California on March 18, 2020. Top federal officials had praised the decision at the White House briefing on March 20, 2020. The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci, says that he very much supported the move, as did the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo. Alpine Awards, a trophy store in Santa Clara, CA is feeling the wrath of the virus also.

President Trump also supported Newsom and Cuomo stating that he “applauds them for taking very bold steps” towards limiting the virus in their states. More than 1,000 people have been tested positive for COVID-19 in the state of California, and it is the most far-reaching directive of any of the states that are battling the epidemic.

The mandatory order in California still allows citizens to visit grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations, food banks, convenience stores, delivery, and takeout restaurants and banks. People can leave their homes to care for relatives or friends, as well as seek out healthcare. When practicing necessary activities, Newsom suggests continuing social distancing. He declares “We are going to keep the grocery stores open. We are going to make sure that you’re getting critical medical supplies. You can still take your kids outside, practicing common sense and social distancing. You can still walk your dog.”

There is no time frame for when the order will be let up. Officials are optimistic that telling others to stay home and restrict gatherings will lighten the number of individuals that get the virus and will ultimately prevent the hospitals from being overrun with sick people. The demand for people staying home marks the strongest escalation of the response to the virus and action in modern California history.
