Anaheim, California – With confirmed cases of the Covid-19 Coronavirus in Orange County, the Lighthouse Treatment Center, a drug and alcohol recovery facility in Anaheim, California, has opted to take precautionary steps to protect its staff and residents.

The Covid-19 coronavirus is a respiratory illness that spreads from person to person via cough or sneeze droplets. It is believed to have originated in Wuhan, China and has now infected thousands of people in more than 90 countries.

Chuck Richardson, Executive Director of the Lighthouse, said that they are taking a proactive stance to protect their residents from the virus because according to experts, the novel coronavirus presents a higher risk especially for people with weakened immune systems.

“People who have abused drugs and alcohol in the past have been shown to have weaker immune systems as the harmful substances lowered their body’s ability to naturally fight off infections and viruses. This is the reason why we are making it a priority to provide our staff and residents with the correct information on how they can prepare and protect themselves from being infected with the virus,” said Richardson.

Richardson shared that they are placing more hand sanitizers in the Lighthouse facilities to encourage hand sanitation. They are also encouraging staff, clients, and residents to avoid person-to-person contact like hugs and handshakes. Staff are also discouraged to perform direct contact with residents and potential clients unless absolutely necessary or part of the job requirement.

“We feel that it is so critical that we educate our staff and residents on coronavirus prevention strategies such as proper hand washing, sanitation, and ways on how to strengthen their immune systems. At the moment, we are also looking at online methods on how we can conduct support group meetings and consultations with addiction recovery patients who may not be able to come to our facility in person,” Richardson said.

To help raise public awareness, the Lighthouse has published an article on its website on Covid-19 coronavirus prevention methods.
