The ozone layer is composed of oxygen molecules and acts as a shield from the Sun’s ultraviolet light by absorbing 97 to 99 percent of it.

While there may be very limited quantities of R22 that can be used in the repair of older air conditioning units, these will come from recycled or stockpiled quantities of R22 and will be very expensive. Thus, it is no longer advisable to have old units repaired, particularly when the energy efficiency of new units are now much higher compared to the older units. The new AC units can substantially reduce the energy bill while the older units will require more and more frequent repairs while continuing to gobble up larger amounts of energy.
