A prominent Calgary dental professional recently discussed the options that patients have today with regards to a more attractive smile. The denturist Calgary says that today, patients have many more options than they did just a decade or so ago and that most patients do not even know what options are available to them regarding dentures and implants.

“Dentures are traditionally prosthetic devices,” says the Calgary dentist. “Just as a prosthetic leg is meant to take the place of the natural limb, a prosthetic tooth takes the place of a natural tooth, and this can be done today in a number of ways.”

Decades ago, dentures were the only form of replacing missing teeth. Most people who wore dentures just 20 or 30 years ago complained about the unnatural way that those dentures made them look. Today however, dentists offer a much higher number of options for those who are missing their teeth and all of these options have a more natural look than those dentures of years gone past.

“Dentures and implants today are designed to look like natural teeth,” says a Calgary based dentist. “These prosthetics can be made to look just like the patient’s other natural teeth, so no one will even know that an implant or dentures are being worn. That’s the goal of denturists, to provide patients with a solution to their smile problems and to ensure that it is a natural looking solution.”

Implants are basically single dentures that are implanted directly into the jaw through a series of minor surgeries. Patients who have one or two missing teeth may opt for implants as opposed to a bridge. Implants are not designed to be taken out by the patient so they offer a more durable and sturdy approach to replacing missing teeth.

Patients can visit just about any denture clinic these days and choose from implants or dentures. Dentists warn that dentures are not going to feel like natural teeth but many patients disagree. Dentists state that it comes down to offering patients options. Many may choose dentures simply because they are the easier solution. Dentures are also much less expensive than implants, although dentists agree that dental implants today are much more affordable than they were when they were first introduced.

“Implants also allow patients to bite into corn on the cob and apples without worries of their teeth slipping,” says the Calgary dentist. “There is the added benefit of not having to purchase glues or pastes to keep the dentures secured, which also takes away from the cost of the implant. Patients do not have to purchase special denture cleaners and glues so there is that added cost benefit. Implants are a one time cost.”

The dental world agrees that the best method of maintaining a beautiful smile is to simply take good care of one’s teeth. However, dental diseases and other issues can cause this prevention to be ineffective, which is when dental implants or dentures are a solution. Implants, most dentists agree, offer benefits such as helping to prevent jaw bone loss and collapse of facial tissue, which is often seen in patients who choose dentures, particularly in those who do not wear their dentures around the clock.

Dentists also agree that it comes down to the patient’s choice and this choice is often made as a result of a number of factors such as the age of the patient, the cost related to both prosthesis and the advice offered to the patient by their chosen dental professional. Patients who are looking at losing their teeth in the future or those who have already lost one or more teeth can certainly learn more about their options on any general dentists’ website, although most dentists agree that each patient is different. A consultation with a trusted dentist is the best way for any patient to determine which of these options is best for their own unique situation.
