Waldorf Academy Toronto has announced that they are sponsoring and performing the Waldorf Academy Puppet Show, which will be hosted by The Bump to Baby Show and will he held on June 2, 2019 at the Artscape Wychwood Barns in Toronto, Ontario. The table-top puppet show will be performed by the Waldorf Academy Early Childhood teachers using natural scenery, naturally-dyed silks, and handmade puppets. The Bump to Baby Show is a community organization in Toronto that was established by two birth doulas and offers products for babies and mothers.

Jennifer Deathe, admissions manager at Waldorf Academy Childcare Centre, says, “Come enjoy the simple beauty of a table-top puppet show and discover how kindness has hidden treasures. It will be performed by our early childhood teachers. You may also want to take a look at the Waldorf Academy Childcare Centre, which is a second home for young children, where our teachers foster an environment that is safe, nurturing and encourages exploration of the natural world. The Waldorf philosophy is based upon an unhurried approach that respects childhood as the foundation for the future.”

The children at Waldorf Academy Childcare Centre are divided into the toddler gropu and the pre-school group. The toddler group is made of children from 18 months to 2 and a half years old. The program used by the childcare centre is made up of a predictable rhythm that is filled with song and activities that elicit joy and goodness in the children’s day. The children get to spend a lot of time outdoors, which is one hour in the morning and also another hour in the afternoon. The toddler group is usually made up of 12 children and 3 teachers.

For the preschool group, imaginative play is a central learning experience for the children. This is because their cognitive, emotional, and physical capacities are growing. Natural science, language arts, math, outdoor play, imaginative free play, and arts and crafts make up the weekly schedule of the preschool children. Here, the teacher to student ratio is 1:8.

Play is the central core of the early childhood program at Waldorf Academy Toronto. This is because the children are able to develop a capacity for problem solving, creative thinking, and social skills through free exploration and imaginative play. In creative play, the children are able to develop social awareness as they learn to play together, manage conflict, cooperate, and develop friendships. Meanwhile, dramatic play helps in the development of a rich vocabulary and early literacy development.

Jennifer Deathe also wants to point out that the rooms at the Waldorf Academy Childcare Centre are colourful, warm, cared-for and filled with the beauty and variety of nature. Thus, the rooms are places where the children are able to let their imagination roam while feeling safe and protected. The simple natural materials in the rooms also serve to encourage the children to create their own stories, games and build structures. The rooms and outdoor environment at the child care centre also offer diverse and challenging physical activities to enhance the children’s proprioception and balance.

The Waldorf Academy offers a number of features. These include adherence to the Waldorf philosophy and program; an Ontario licensed childcare centre; RECE teachers and Waldorf training and mentoring; three natural playgrounds and a covered front porch; one toddler room; four preschool rooms; access to Spadina House grounds; two, three or five day options; healthy snacks and lunches that are local and organic whenever feasible; school day of 8:00 am to 6:00 pm; student and community activities with the main school; a preschool half-day program, from 8:30am to noon; and festivals and birthday celebrations.

The Waldorf Academy Childcare Centre was established in the fall of 2008 and shares the grounds with the Waldorf Academy, which is a non-profit, accredited Waldorf elementary school. People who would like to know more about the Toronto Waldorf school may want to visit their website or contact them by email or by telephone.
