Baltimore, MD: Topcon Healthcare Solution, a software first company focused on helping clinicians meet the needs of their patients, is showcasing Topcon Screen, a Diabetic Retinopathy Screening solution for physicians, at the 2018 American Association of Diabetes Educators Conference. Topcon will demonstrate its diabetic retinopathy screening program developed specifically for physicians that serve as the front lines to prevent this sight-threatening disease.

Don Feronti, Director of Screening Sales, says, “Making the screening possible in the primary care space helps physicians identify patients who may be suffering from diabetic retinopathy and refer them for treatment. It just makes sense to be able to scan these patients as early as possible at the point of care.”

At the Topcon booth, healthcare providers can see the diabetic retinopathy screening workflow in action. Specifically, doctors can learn how office staff can provide an eye exam using Topcon’s robotic camera, receive a graded eye exam report, refer patients for any necessary treatment, and fulfill additional HEDIS compliance requirements.

Dr. Robert DiMartino, a Professor Emeritus of Vision Science and Clinical Optometry from the University of California, Berkeley, stated, “Topcon Healthcare Solutions leverages technology to provide the primary care provider with an effective path towards improving the quality of care in patients with diabetes while also achieving performance requirements. Topcon Healthcare Solutions restores your control of this critical piece in the overall management of patients with diabetes.”

Over time, diabetes damages blood vessels in the retina eventually causing the retinal tissue to swell, resulting in cloudy or blurred vision. If untreated, vision can be impaired permanently. Retinal screening is essential because if the disease gets caught early, treatment is effective at reducing the risk of visual impairment and blindness. As stated by the National Eye Institute, “Early detection and treatment can reduce the risk of blindness by 95 percent. Because diabetic retinopathy often lacks early symptoms, people with diabetes should get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year.”

Come and see Topcon at AADE booth #220 to learn more.
