Local Manhattan Beach, California resident and founder of the Cancer Journeys Foundation, Robert Hess, has announced that he will be competing in the upcoming 2017 World Masters Track Cycling Championship. The event is set to take place on October 11, 2017 at the Velo Sports Center at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California.
Robert is a 14 year prostate cancer survivor and will be riding in tribute to America's 15 million cancer survivors and to the memory of America's cancer victims. He will be wearing a jersey with the name of cancer victims and survivors he gathered during his trans-America prostate cancer motorcycle ride in 2010. More information on Robert Hess and the foundation can be found at https://cancerjourneysfoundation.org/tribute/.
Robert states, "I'm honored to be able to represent America's cancer community at the world cycling championship. A cancer diagnosis means a lifelong journey dealing with the disease. We as a nation need to focus on prevention, early detection, and support for the more than 15 million Americans currently living with cancer."
The Cancer Journeys Foundation provides tools to cancer survivors to help them survive. These resources include support from medical teams at the end of their treatment course. Robert Hess established the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project in 2006. This non-profit organization operates with the goal of reducing the number of deaths every year that lost to prostate cancer. In 2010, the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project developed a free online early detection system for prostate cancer called ProstateTracker.org.
Robert has been honored by the Los Angeles Times Business Journal Health Leadership for his advocacy against prostate cancer and was chosen as the National Cancer Champion in 2015 by the Amgen Corporation's Breakaway From Cancer Program. More about Robert Hess and his fight against prostate cancer can be seen at https://cancerjourneysfoundation.org/.
"Early detection is key in fighting any form of cancer," says Robert. "We created ProstateTracker.org to give people the resources they need to determine their risk of developing this cancer and offer information to help keep them on track in terms of keeping their prostates healthy."
The World Masters Track Cycling Championship is open to men and women who are 35 years of age and older. The event consists of three sprints as well as four endurance events.
