Hong Kong’s film industry has always been a significant part of Hong Kong’s cultural landscape. This year’s Sundance Film Festival lands on 17-27 September, hosted in The Metroplex in Kowloon Bay. Make it a day’s worth of culturally enriching activities leading up to the big screening. Tribute Hotels are covering a day-trip around Kowloon, leading up to the highly-anticipated screenings of some spectacular movies.

Yau Ma Tei: Check-In

There are many boutique luxury hotels in Hong Kong that will bring you closer to the local action with expert knowledge and a uniquely memorable experience. Stay in one in the Yau Ma Tei or Mong Kok area as you’ll be in the heart of a bustling neighbourhood and find hidden gems right outside your door.

Head to the Mido Café for a typical Hong Kong lunch, and find yourself sitting on the set of many classic Hong Kong films such as “The World of Suzie Wong” and “Moonlight Express”. Mido Café has been around for 65 years and not much has changed to their décor since they opened in the 1950s, throwing you back in time.

Take a stroll around the neighbourhood and find some iconic locations such as the Tin Hau Temple, the 100+ years old Red Brick House, the Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market, and also the Broadway Cinematheque. The Broadway Cinematheque regularly screens indie films and also sits right next to the book store/café, Kubrick. Stop by for a coffee and browse through the store specialized in books about films.

Lok Fu: Kowloon Walled City Park

Hop on to the MTR and head towards Lok Fu Station where you’re 10 minutes-walk away from where the infamous Kowloon Walled City used to be; or what is now the Kowloon Walled City Park. Stroll through the park and you’ll learn the history of the ungoverned settlement that was once scattered with triads, prostitution and drug use, juxtaposed with the residents of a truly tight-knit community. Back when the Kowloon Walled City still existed, it was yet another iconic backdrop to numerous Hong Kong films, particularly triad and gangster films.

Kowloon Bay: Sundance Film Festival 2015 Hong Kong

Finally, take the MTR to Kowloon Bay Station and get ready to enjoy the 11 highly anticipated films screening this year at the Sundance Film Festival 2015 Hong Kong. Just to name a few, you can immerse yourself in award winning documentaries “The Wolfpack” and “Cartel Land”, or stay at the edge of your seat with thrillers “The Stanford Prison Experiment” or “The Witch”. If you end up loving the film so much you don’t want to leave, stay behind for the director’s Q&A session for selected screenings and ask away.
