1st Family Dental in Chicago, Illinois, has announced that they have recently published a new blog post for those who ask, "What does smoking do to your teeth?" The dental practice states that they see patients regularly who have stained or damaged teeth and gums and decided that they should help patients to better understand the dangers of smoking with regards to oral health.

"People know about the general health issues associated with smoking," says Vicky Khawaja, a spokesperson for the clinic, "But most patients are not aware of what years of smoking can do to their teeth and gums."

The Chicago dental services provider says that the blog post is designed to give consumers an idea of the damage that they may be incurring if they continue to smoke. It states that there are more than 30 million people in the United States alone who smoke and states that there are a number of dental issues that come with smoking.

"Aside from the obvious teeth discoloration," says Khawaja, "smoking can cause bad breath, gum disease, and even cancer in some cases. Our goal is to get this information out to our patients and help them to realize how much healthier and more attractive their smiles would be if they gave up smoking for good."

The post outlines in detail the dangers of smoking to the teeth and gums and goes over specifics such as how smokers are much more likely to develop gum disease and that treatments for gum disease do not work as well on smokers as on non-smokers.

Smoking decreases the ability to fight off bacteria which is what Khawaja says makes it more difficult to treat for certain dental conditions. The post also outlines various treatment methods that are used on those who smoke and details the differences in treatments between smokers and non-smokers. The post indicates that smokers have a much more difficult and more expensive time of gaining a healthy smile than those who have never smoked.
