BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on serious safety concerns as well as numerous lawsuits that have been filed related to the use of Xarelto, a blood-thinning drug manufactured by Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of the Johnson and Johnson Corporation. To date, more than 2,800 cases have been filed in federal courts across the nation claiming that the drug caused dangerous and often times fatal uncontrollable bleeding. Since there have been so many lawsuits filed against the manufacturers for the same reason, these cases have been consolidated in a multidistrict litigation (MDL), numbered MDL 2592. In addition to the MDL, a tort litigation group has been formed in Philadelphia, PA combining more than 550 more Xarelto lawsuits together.

Xarelto is approved for and can be prescribed to treat atrial fibrillation, that can, at times, cause blood clots or stroke. Blood thinners are prescribed as a preventative measure in these types of medical situations to prevent such serious occurrences.

In one particular case, the plaintiff has filed a lawsuit in a Vermont federal courtroom (number 2:14-cv-00159-CR) on behalf of her father, who she claims in her court documents, died as a result of excessive bleeding in his brain which doctors could not get to clot due to his use of Xarelto.

Other blood thinners, such as warfarin, were released on the market with an antidote such as Vitamin K, that would counteract this class of blood thinner and thus allow the patient to form blood clots to stop the bleeding. Xarelto, on the other hand, did not have any such antidote at the time of its release on the market. The only recourse was for doctors to resort to life-threatening surgical procedures or transfusions of blood.

The plaintiff in the Vermont case states that the drug's manufacturers were negligent in knowingly releasing a drug with no known antidote that could cause uncontrollable fatal bleeding.
