Dr. Hickman, MD, FACS, a microsurgeon in New Braunfels, TX, strives to provide an affordable vasectomy reversal by offering two all-inclusive options, which means there are no hidden expenses. The price quoted will be the amount to be paid, which means patients are assured there will be no additional costs. The first all-inclusive option is $3,300 and this will include oral sedation and local anesthesia. The second option is a bit more costly and is priced at $4,200 because it includes IV rather than local anesthesia. Furthermore, a board certified anesthesiologist will be administering the IV sedation.

Vasectomy reversal is a surgical procedure where the male reproductive tract, called the vas deferens, that was cut during the vasectomy procedure, is reconnected. Dr. Hickman explains, “I’ll be performing a microsurgical repair of the vas deferens with a powerful operating microscope and fine nylon suture (much finer than a human hair). A typical repair requires 10-15 stitches. The goal is to create direct and careful alignment of the lumen of the two ends of the vas and a watertight closure for a higher success rate.”

Dr. Hickman adds, “I do a microsurgical repair of the vas deferens using a Zeiss OPMI-MDM operating microscope utilizing 10-0 nylon suture (much finer than a human hair). This suture will be used for the 10 to 15 stitches that will be need. The purpose is to create a direct and careful alignment of the lumen of the two ends of the vas and make sure there is a watertight closure.”

Dr. Hickman will get a sample fluid from the testicular end of the vas deferens and examine this under a microscope to find out if it contains whole sperm or even sperm parts. It is important to note that the testicle should still be producing sperm even after the vasectomy. Thus, the sample fluid should contain some sperm or sperm parts. If there is nothing at all, it implies that an obstruction is present at the vasectomy site and a possible rupture of the vas deferens in the epididymis.

When there is no sperm or sperm components in the sample fluid, Dr. Hickman will have to perform a vasoepididymostomy, and not just a vasovasostomy. The vasoepididymostomy will require a microscopic invagination of the epididymal tube into the lumen of the vas deferens. Fortunately for the patient, while Dr. Hickman will be doing more, there will be no additional costs for the patient because the prices quoted are all-inclusive costs.

Meanwhile Dr. Hickman wants to encourage not just men who live in New Braunfels but also those in other places in the State of Texas, and even other states to come to New Braunfels for the procedure. As such, they will be able to hit two birds with one stone. They can get the vasectomy reversal and also get to enjoy the many attractions and activities available in the tourist town and nearby areas. To help encourage them to come to New Braunfels, Dr. Hickman has negotiated exclusive travel deals with local hotels, allowing out-of-town patients to get as much as 50 percent discount on their hotel accommodations.

New Braunfels is proud of its two attractive rivers, which are the Comal River and the Guadalupe River. This means that are a lot of opportunities for floating, paddleboarding, rafting, fishing, tubing, and swimming. There are also other attractive places in the area, such as the village of Gruene.

Started in 1988, Dr. Hickman offers his pioneering microsurgical and minimally invasive method for vasectomy reversal. He underwent general surgery residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and it was during this period that he came to know about the microsurgery methods that were then being used in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Having recognized the various benefits that his patients would be able to get from the minimally invasive methods, he decided to use these microsurgery techniques in his vasectomy reversal practice.
