Chicago, Illinois -
Dating site for STD singles Meet Positives is urging its users to be careful of individuals with malicious intent on its platform who might be using it to scam others like them.
The dating site put out a cautionary statement in response to a recent report from Bankless Times, an online publication providing original reporting on the alternative finance industry, including blockchain, cryptocurrency, Bitcoin and Ethereum, ICOs, peer-to-peer lending, fin-tech, and crowdfunding. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had reported earlier that Americans had lost over $1 billion in crypto to scams since the beginning of 2021. According to the website’s analysis of the FTC report, of the total crypto lost by Americans between January 2021 and March 2022, $185 million was lost to romance scams, the second most common type of crypto scam. Bankless Times’s analysis also concluded that, on average, romance crypto scam victims lose up to $10,000.
A spokesperson for Meet Positives reacted to the Bankless Times report’s findings in its statement by saying, “The fact that romance crypto scams are the second most common type of crypto scams doesn’t surprise us. Trapping and scamming unsuspecting and well-meaning souls who are just looking for companionship is a game as old as time itself. You can’t even blame the victims because it is a part of human nature to make stupid and reckless decisions when one’s feelings are involved. Dating sites are a perfect hunting ground for scammers as people are more willing to hear out what strangers have to say on platforms like ours in the hope of finding their soul mate. The impulse to immediately suspect strangers, that you would usually reserve for people messaging you out of the blue on other social media websites, is curtailed. Dating site users tend to give strangers a chance, especially if the person’s profile is convincingly faked and attractive. Coupled with the rise of cryptocurrency, which is by its nature completely anonymous, you have an ecosystem where scammers can brazenly target victims. This is an even bigger concern for a platform like Meet Positives which is a refuge for its users from the judgment that they get on other dating platforms. We don’t blame our users as we realize that a lot of them are already emotionally vulnerable due to the cold shoulder that they get from potential mates on other sites on account of their STD affliction. That is why we work very hard on our end to ensure our platform is not conducive to scammers who are looking to manipulate our users and make a quick buck.”
When asked about what the Meet Positives app is doing to ensure that its platform is free of scammers, the spokesperson says, “Our users’ safety is our topmost priority. To that end, we have even posted a knowledge resource on our website where we list common sense tips that we would like all our users to be aware of and follow. We are also doing our best to identify accounts that exhibit suspicious behavior. We have a dedicated fraud prevention team that works round the clock to ensure our legitimate users are protected from the small group of accounts that intend to scam them. We have even fostered a partnership with other security agencies to put in place measures that ensure our users have a safe experience with others like them. However, the users also have a responsibility to be aware of the tricks that scammers use to entrap them and to report such users immediately to our fraud prevention team. We urge you to go through the article on our website, titled “Online Safety Tips”, which presents an overview of all the steps that you should take to protect yourself.”
