Okeechobee, Florida -

Ultimate Flags Inc, a company based in Okeechobee, Florida, is pleased to announce that they are celebrating George Washington's Birthday on Feb. 22 and they will proudly fly their flags to honor a true American Patriot. While Washington’s Birthday is now celebrated as President’s Day on the third Monday of February, which is February 15 this year, the actual birthday of Washington is February 22. Ultimate Flags is a company that makes flags and ribbons to symbolize a particular cause, including love of country or to show support for a certain politician or for one organization or cause. Jonica and Glenn Hough bought the company from the man who originally founded the business on July 4, 1997. It should be noted that in a previous release, the company had announced they were celebrating freedom of speech embodied in the First Amendment of the Constitution.

George Washington was born on February 11, 1731 in Virginia. However, they were using the Julian calendar at that time. In 1752, Britain and all its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar which had the effect of moving Washington’s birthday by one year and 11 days to February 22, 1732. US citizens had celebrated Washington’s Birthday long before it was declared a federal holiday. During the centennial of his birthday, a special celebration was held, with Congress adjourning on February 22, 1832 as a way to honor the memory of the first US president and to commemorate his birth.

Americans started celebrating President’s Day one year after the passing away of the first US president. This was in 1800 and it was known then as Washington’s Day. In the 1870s, it was legislated as a federal holiday, although the original proclamation was only for the District of Columbia. Later on, this was expanded to include the whole United States in 1885.

However, when the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed in the late 1960s, the celebration of President’s Day was moved to the third Monday of February. And the third Monday of 2021 fell on February 15. And ironically, President’s Day will have no chance of actually falling on February 22, which is the actual birthday of George Washington. This was due to the desire of the legislators to celebrate the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln, which is on February 12 and George Washington in a single day. Thus, it is somewhere between February 12 and February 22. And later on, the President’s day evolved further as a celebration for all US presidents, past or present, living or decease.
