Irvine, CA-based Hard Drive Recovery Group (HDRG) is reaching out to educate their community about tape storage and how advances in technology have made this once-obsolete medium relevant once more. As with many of the other topics the company has explored over the years, this outreach comes in the form of a blog post, which can be viewed for free on their official website.

In ‘We Got It On Tape – Tape Drives Plod Ahead,’ the company states, “Millennials may relate to this piece of news as the nostalgia of their childhood, and Generation Z’s may not relate at all, but tape storage is set to come in capacities of 400 TB.” These numbers, as the post goes on to explain, far exceed the norm established by other storage mediums in recents years, propelling tape storage to the forefront of the industry once more.

Many who grew up either using tape players or witnessing a new generation of digital media slowly but surely render their parents’ gadgets obsolete will recognize this technology as the medium through which cassette tapes, mix tapes and more enjoyed their heyday. While trend-watchers may have assumed this technology would soon only be accessible through museums and personal collections, however, Hard Drive Recovery Group shares that Fujifilm has developed a new type of tape drive that boasts a capacity of 384 terabytes (TB). In comparison, most consumer hard drives are available in increments of around 1 TB, or 1,000 gigabytes.

However, this does not mean that the average PC or Mac user will soon be able to purchase one of these tape drives for use at home. HDRG says, “The current batch of tape drives, the ones that have the capacity to contain mind-boggling amounts of data, are not for personal use. They are currently available for use for data centers only, as their physical formats do not allow them to be connected to PCs and laptops yet, and these are the gadgets that personal users usually connect their hard drives to. So, we still have to exercise a bit of patience and wait for this piece of tech to be available to us in a few years, maybe? In the meantime, let us be happy with the advances being made in storage.”

Notably, the company states that both commercial and consumer data storage products will continue to improve in the near future. While the average household will not be able to make use of the bleeding edge technology employed by large corporations, they will still have access to more accessible (and affordable) technologies that enlarge their storage possibilities. For instance, advancements in hard drives has also meant that storage capacity is continuing to increase over time, giving computer users a great deal of flexibility across a wide range of products. Even external hard drives have seen vast improvements in recent years.

HDRG adds, “If you have forgotten to back up your important files on an external hard drive and your laptop gets broken, you may come to find yourself experiencing data loss due to a device crash or other scenario that makes it impossible for you to access your data without help. If this happens to be the case, you should know that your data is not beyond recovery. We encourage you to get in touch with us and ask how we can get your data back for you, regardless of what kind of damage your device has suffered.” Notably, Hard Disk Recovery Group is widely regarded for their ability to retrieve data from seemingly impossible scenarios, ranging from accidental deletion to fire and water damage. Their expertise also extends to a wide range of data storage mediums.

HDRG’s blog hosts a number of other articles on various topics related to computers and data recovery, including for data tapes. These articles serve as an excellent introduction into many areas of the computer world, and the company invites their community to browse this resource at their convenience. Similarly, more information regarding their data recovery services can be found on their website as well. Customers may also contact Maureen Davies of Hard Drive Recovery Group for further details.
