Medical reports indicate that chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis cases have been on the rise for the past five consecutive years.
There were 1.7 million cases of chlamydia reported in 2018, which is a 3% increase from what was reported in 2017. This is the most reported increase in a year though some experts attribute this to an increase in testing.
There were about 580,000 cases of gonorrhea reported and this is the highest number since 1991. The rate of infection was placed at a 5% increase. Scientists believe that the increase might be fueled by an antibiotic resistance.
Syphilis cases were found to increase by 15% with the most contagious cases of the disease reaching 35,000, which is also the highest since 1991.
According to Jack Lombardi, founder of Meet Positives, "There has been an increase in STD cases in the past few years, this might be because people are easily getting infected and also because of the increase in testing and awareness. The only sure way to know if you are infected is getting tested."
