The Pet Spa at Soap.Club, a natural pet shampoo purveyor based out of Ontario, Canada, advises that there are many details to ponder before adopting a dog or cat.

The numbers are staggering. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA); each year approximately 7.6 million animals enter animal shelters and nearly 3 million of those don’t make it out. The contributing factors to animal homelessness are many. Organized dog fighting, animal hoarding, and puppy mills are just a few of the often complex issues involved.

Jack Widmer, manager of the Pet Spa at Soap.Club advises that “There are millions of homeless pets across the US and Canada just waiting for forever homes, and adopting one of these pets is a wonderful thing. There are a number of critical factors to contemplate when considering adoption to make the experience as rewarding as possible for both the pet and the adopting family.”

Listings for local animal rescue shelters, (many breed specific) are available on-line. As well, there are official shelter and rescue group websites which post listings of available dogs and cats.

Mr. Widmer recommends due diligence in researching a reputable organization. He states; “New pet parents should take into account that they may be spending the next 12-15 years together with their new companion. It's a serious commitment,” he adds. The following should be considered prior to adoption:

Age And Health Issues Of The Adoptee.

Mature dogs and cats tend to be more sedate, and will require less constant general maintenance and/or training than a young pup or kitten. Consequently, older pets could develop age related health issues and may need more attention or medical care. It is advisable to find a veterinarian and schedule a wellness exam as soon as possible after adoption.

Temperament, Grooming Requirements, And Size Of The Breed.

It is recommended to have specifics in mind before going to look for a pet. The characteristics of specific breeds, even mixed breeds, are fairly easy to identify. Mr. Widmer suggests making a list of desired features of a pet and taking that list along for referral when visiting the shelter. Many dogs and cats have sensitive skin types necessitating the use of specific grooming products such as hypoallergenic pet shampoo, and should be taken into account.

The History Of The Animal

A new pet may lack training, and could have specific fears or phobias. In most cases many behavioral issues can be resolved with proper training. If the adjustment period is overlong or difficult, it's advisable to seek the assistance of a professional dog trainer or behavior specialist.

Conditions Of The Adoptive Home

It takes time for any new pet to adjust to their new forever home. Smells, sights, and sounds will be unique and maybe even a bit scary. Felines in particular are not fond of change and can be slow to regulate to their new surroundings.

Each and every case is unique, but adoption is indeed a noble endeavor. Pet adoption provides a new lease on life for a deserving animal which has fallen to unfortunate circumstances. It also sets an example for others to follow.
