As Talcum Powder Lawsuit Filings Continue, The American Cancer Society Offers Information

TheProductLawyers.com reports on a statement by The American Cancer Society concerning the alleged links between cancer and talcum powder.

According to The American Cancer Society’s website, “it has been suggested that talcum powder might cause cancer in the ovaries if the powder particles (applied to the genital area or on sanitary napkins, diaphragms, or condoms) were to travel through the vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes to the ovary.” The site continues by explaining that studies have found mixed results with some indicating a slightly increased risk and others reporting no risk. Research is continuing on the issue as developments are made.

These developments are especially important to many women in the US as lawsuits continue to develop over the alleged link between ovarian cancer and talcum powder. Lawsuits against the pharmaceutical giant now total near 2,000. These cases all claim that the company marketed and sold products knowing that they were linked to cancer. These cases began in 2009 with a woman from Sioux Falls, South Dakota and have since spurred thousands of others. Johnson and Johnson has adamantly denied claims that their products cause cancer and has not issued any warnings about them as a result.

Over the past 40 years, numerous studies have been done on the alleged link between talcum powder and cancer. While some studies have found a connection, others have found none. Despite the split in the evidence, three juries have found that a link does exist and have awarded plaintiffs with millions in compensation. Meanwhile, two similar cases were thrown out in New Jersey by a judge who stated that there was a lack of scientific evidence to support the plaintiffs’ claims.
