TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent lawsuit filed by a Louisiana woman who claims Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products led to the development of ovarian cancer.
The Louisiana Record states that the plaintiff claims she used Johnson & Johnson products for 10 years before developing ovarian cancer. Her argument bears similarity to three others that ended with plaintiffs receiving millions in compensation.
Lawsuits against the pharmaceutical giant now total near 2,000. These cases all claim that the company marketed and sold products knowing that they were linked to cancer. These cases began in 2009 with a woman from Sioux Falls, South Dakota and have since spurred thousands of others. Johnson and Johnson has adamantly denied claims that their products cause cancer and has not issued any warnings about them as a result.
Over the past 40 years, numerous studies have been done on the alleged link between talcum powder and cancer. While some studies have found a connection, others have found none. Despite the split in the evidence, three juries have found that a link does exist and have awarded plaintiffs with millions in compensation. Meanwhile, two similar cases were thrown out in New Jersey by a judge who stated that there was a lack of scientific evidence to support the plaintiffs’ claims.
