TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent suit filed in Texas that claims the use of Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder killed a woman by causing ovarian cancer.
The lawsuit (Case Number 3:16-cv-02353), filed in the Northern District of Texas, alleges that a woman’s daughter died as a result of using talcum powder for years. The woman’s daughter was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 43 after using Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder for 23 years. The plaintiff alleges that Johnson & Johnson knew about the ovarian cancer risk but didn’t warn consumers.
Hers is not the first lawsuit to be filed concerning talcum powder’s effects. Thousands of women in the U.S. have made similar claims alleging that Johnson & Johnson hid valuable medical information that prevented consumers from knowing the dangers of using the powders. Those plaintiffs further claim that the use of Johnson & Johnson’s powders as a feminine hygiene product are directly linked to ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson has denied claims that their products cause cancer and has stated that no causal link exists.
Over the last 45 years, however, numerous studies have found that women who use baby powder as a feminine hygiene product are more likely to develop this debilitating disease.
