The world can’t wait for May 2 to arrive so that the two best boxers in the world can go head to head and claim the championship. Dubbed the “Fight of the Century”, the boxing match between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is expected to be the richest fight in the history of boxing. Tickets are anticipated to sell between $1,500 to 7,500, if at all as rumor has it that only 1,000 tickets will be sold to the public, with the rest reserved for celebrities, sports personalities, promoters’ associates and other stakeholders in the industry. The resale market sees ticket prices rising to as much as $100,000 for ringside spots. In ticket sales alone, (not including closed circuit viewing, the Mayweather and Pacquiao fight is expected to bring in a whopping $150 million in revenue. Both camps have agreed to split 60 to 40 in Mayweather’s favour, but Manny Pacquiao stands to gain more in a rematch if he wins this bout.
However, tickets have yet to be sold and there are only 11 days left until fight night. Bob Arum, Top Rank promoter, went on record to say that contracts remain unsigned due to a disagreement regarding signatories on the paperwork. It is this very back-and-forth that has driven demand for the fight to skyrocket, with fans anticipating and waiting for a fight for half a decade. Past delays were attributed to failure of both teams to agree on terms, including Pacquiao’s refusal to take a blood test on Mayweather’s terms.
The mega-fight comes at the perfect time, contrary to what others say, as both men are in their prime – more matured fighters who, because they were given the chance to learn more about their craft in the past five years. Analysts are expecting the fight to break previous records and it already has even before the fight has begun. Countless fans have booked reservations at nearby Las Vegas hotels, despite the absence of paper tickets.
When the best of the best come together, the world expects history. Manny Pacquiao tells BBC, "What I feel right now is motivation, inspiration and determination. The killer instinct is there, I love it." Mayweather, with his calculated, defensive, style of fighting, and Pacquiao, with his speed and power, will make for an interesting fight. Floyd Mayweather risks losing his WBC welterweight title while Manny Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title will be put at stake. There’s no wonder the whole world wants to tune in.
Even the referee is considered one of the best in the industry, in the person of Kenny Bayless and will leave $25,000 richer after the match. The fight will be judged by Burt Clements, Glenn Feldman and Dave Moretti who will make $20,000 each.
